Biomarkers Could Warn of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

WEDNESDAY, March 14 (HealthDay News) — U.S. researchers say they've
spotted biomarkers that herald carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive
stress injuries.
This is the first time that such biomarkers (different kinds of
chemicals) have been identified in humans, and the finding could someday
lead to early detection and prevention of carpel tunnel, tendonitis and
other related conditions, says a team from Temple University in
Philadelphia.

Letters: Specialist training for junior doctors is still a lottery

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

We have just received an eight-page missive from our local primary care trust detailing all the procedures and operations which will not now be available on the NHS in our area. These include surgery for varicose veins, haemorrhoids, lipoma, sebaceous cysts, gallstones, carpal tunnel syndrome and trigger finger, plus many others. Neither will they offer physiotherapy ultrasound, spinal fusion for chronic back pain nor infertility investigation and treatment. While none of these conditions is life threatening, they can and do have a major impact on the quality of people’s lives. They were withdrawn by the PCT purely to save money and without any consultation with local people. If these cuts were announced by the Department of Health at national level, there would be an outcry. But because they are being done piecemeal, PCT by PCT, this government manages to hack away at the NHS by stealth. I fear for the future of our health service.

Charity calls for compensation for flower workers

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Women growing and cutting flowers in Kenya and Colombia for sale in Britain’s biggest supermarkets for Mother’s Day are not only paid rock-bottom wages but also face serious health problems as a result of exposure to dangerous pesticides, a charity warned today.
The flower workers, who are mostly single mothers, typically work at least a 15-hour day but earn just over £24 a week - less than half a living wage - according to research from War on Want.

Computers don’t cause carpal tunnel syndrome - people do

Wednesday, March 14th, 2007

A study presented at the recent annual meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons suggests that the relationship between carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) and repetitive hand motion is weaker than previously thought.
CTS symptoms include hand numbness, weakness and atrophy of thumb muscles. The cause of physical factors that cause increased pressure on the carpal tunnel are still relatively unknown though the study suggests that biological/genetic factors are about two to three times more likely than repetitive hand use.
